| Stroke Definitions Service The strike used to put the ball in play. Either underhand or overhead is legal, but the overhand, with a complete rotation of the serving arm, is considered best (most important shot of the game). Service Return The stroke used to return an opponent's service (second most important shot of the game). Forehand The stroke used to strike a ball appoaching on the same side that the racket is held. Backhand Stroke for playing a ball that comes to a player on the opposite side on which he holds his racket. Drive Either a forehand or a backhand stroke that sends the ball low and hard over the net. Lob Stroke whereby the ball is hit up in the air. Used to return balls over the head and out of reach of the opponent. Volley A stroke made by hitting a ball before it has touched the ground (except in serving). Half Volley A short stroke made by hitting the ball just off the ground on the rise. Overhead Smash A stroke like a service stroke, used on a high ball, generally near the net, to bring the ball down hard, and at a very sharp angle, into the opponent's court. Approach Shot Any shot utilized to gain or approach the net, either after the ball has bounced (an approach groundstroke) or while the ball is in the air (an approach volley). Drop Shot A stroke made by hitting the ball just clearing the net and close to the net. Serve and Volley A combination technique of serving and approaching the net to volley the service return. Slice Ball hit with a combination of underspin and sidespin or, when serving, a combination of topspin and sidespin. Smash Stroke whereby the player hits a ball that has been played to him above head-level. A smash is an overhead shot hit with power. |
