| Tennis Zones Rally Groundstroke Zone (neutral or defensive court position) - player's goal should be to keep the ball in play...not to go for a winner! Aggressive Groundstroke Zone (offensive position) - player can be more aggressive in her/his shot selection. Moving your opponent around becomes easier. Hard hit, angled groundstrokes frequently can result in out-and-out winners. No Man's Land - player is too close to the net to hit groundstrokes because the ball can bounce at player's feet. Volleys are equally difficult because the player must get very low to strike the ball and usually a player cannot volley deep into the opponent's court from this position. The player should use a half volley which requires timing and finesse. Try to avoid getting caught in No Man's Land. Volley Zone (offensive position) - volleys should be used here. On occasion, you could be forced back by an opponent's lob and have to hit an overhead smash. Don't expect to win points on the first volley. Remember, never move backwards unless there is no other choice. |
